From Member to Leader:

Why Serving on the Board Matters

Ever wondered what it’s really like to serve on our chapter’s board? Join us for an engaging, one-hour session where past presidents pull back the curtain on their leadership journeys. You’ll hear real stories of how board service has boosted careers, built lasting connections, and developed skills they never imagined — all starting with minimal to no prior board experience. Discover the powerful support you’ll receive from our national organization and fellow board members, and see why stepping up could be the most rewarding move of your professional life. Come curious, leave inspired, and maybe even ready to claim your seat at the table.

This session is led by four accomplished HR professionals who, together, bring over 50 years of volunteer leadership experience as ASHRM past and current board members. None of them knew each other before beginning their volunteer journeys, but through their individual contributions to the chapter, they developed mutual respect, deep trust, and long-lasting relationships that continue today.

Each has held multiple leadership roles within the association — from committee positions to chapter president — and credits SHRM and their board service with providing career-defining skills and experiences they might never have encountered otherwise. Their chapter leadership experiences were catalysts for them to lead state and regional SHRM affiliates, expanding their influence and ability to shape the HR profession at multiple levels.

Beyond ASHRM, all four are active contributors to their communities, volunteering their time and expertise with a variety of organizations. They have been recognized at local and regional levels for their service, innovation.

Collectively, they are passionate about mentoring the next generation of leaders, championing the profession, and demonstrating that board service is not just a commitment — it’s a catalyst for personal growth, career advancement, and lasting impact.
