Career Pathways: Role Mapping Lab
An HR Workshop with John Gregoire
(Supporting the SHRM Foundation)
Build clarity, engagement, and mobility with a practical career-pathway decision-making grid you can take back to your team. In this highly interactive session, participants will learn the grid framework, then work in small groups to map real employee roles, discuss placement choices, and explore how roles interact across functions and levels. The approach is compellingly powerful for organizations with a high number of technical employees (e.g., engineering), yet flexible enough to adapt to nearly any environment.
Note: Get ready to participate! John’s high-energy role-mapping activity drives the session, so we’re starting a bit early at 11:20 AM sharp.

Objectives:
1. Identify and describe the components of the career-pathway grid framework. Participants will be able to list and explain the key elements of the grid, including role levels, functional categories, and progression indicators.
2. Apply the career-pathway grid to real employee roles within a small group setting. Participants will collaboratively map at least two actual or hypothetical roles using the grid, justifying placement decisions based on role responsibilities and organizational structure.
3. Analyze cross-functional role interactions and career mobility opportunities. Participants will discuss how mapped roles interact across departments and identify at least one potential career mobility path for a technical or non-technical employee.
4. Create a draft career-pathway grid tailored to their own team or organization. Participants will begin developing a customized grid they can refine and implement post-seminar, incorporating feedback from peers and facilitators.
5. Evaluate the effectiveness of the career-pathway grid in supporting employee development and organizational goals. Participants will reflect on the grid’s potential impact and identify at least two ways it can be used to enhance clarity, engagement, or mobility within their team or organization.

I am on a mission to be part of the most inspirational workplaces in the world. I want to create environments that build excellence, improve performance, and shape the future. I believe we can all live fulfilling lives, have what we want, and improve the world for future generations in the process.
Work environments and the people who lead them play an extremely important role in building healthy communities and fulfilled lives. We spend a third of our life in the workplace. So much of who we are is driven, defined, and valued by our occupations. I want to hear people say " I know I am doing something good and I respect and appreciate the people I am doing it with."
Our leaders are the builders of tomorrow. They create great places to work, live, and experience through thoughtful, purposeful, interaction with the people they lead and serve.
What kind of place do you want to work at?
What kind of company do you want to be a part of?
What kind of leader do you want driving your organization forward?
The answers are important and often easy to come by. Living the answers, making it happen, and refusing to compromise is the challenge.
I want to work with courageous people who know their values and are determined to lead with them.
